Cigna Special Programs
Here are a few highlights of some programs that Cigna members can participate in.
CIGNA Well Informed Program
At CIGNA HealthCare we are taking significant steps to build a solid foundation of clinical support. The CIGNA Well Informed program aims to help you deliver quality health care to your patients. Timely and actionable information will help support the management of patient care and empower patients to take an active role in their personal health. This commitment to providing you with the best possible service and information is intended to benefit you and your patients by meeting the following objectives:
- Increase patient compliance with physician’s treatment plans
- Identify potential adverse drug reactions
- Inform a physician about prescriptions and services provided by other physicians that could impact treatment plans
- Alert physicians of potential divergence from common or accepted standards of care
- Bring together disparate pieces of clinical information for physicians’ use
- Encourage members to be involved and informed about their health status
- Increase preventive health activities
- Support physicians in chronic disease management
- Flag specific patient health issues and/or concerns that may be urgent in nature
How Well Informed Works
Using rule-based software, together with our integrated medical, pharmacy, and lab data, Well Informed identifies possible health issues and/or concerns that can be used in managing your patient’s health.
- The Program will focus on 31 chronic illnesses, acute conditions and disease prevention including diabetes, COPD, hypertension, depression, cholesterol, etc. The program will address over 300 potential clinical gaps and opportunities.
- Each month, our integrated data will be analyzed at the patient/member level, using clinical rule-based software.
Well Informed then communicates this information to you and your patient whenever a potential issue is identified:
- Mailings are sent to you containing a clinical data profile for any patient that has been identified as having a potential treatment improvement opportunity. This view of your patient’s health is intended to help you determine whether to initiate any interventions or adjustments to the prescribed treatment plans for those patients.
- Simple, easy to understand profiles are sent to patients, to increase their understanding of potential gaps, and improve adherence to existing therapies.
- The same information is shared with the clinical staff of our medical management programs, including case management, CIGNA Well Aware for Better Health® disease management, Health Advisor, Pharmacy outreach, and CIGNA Behavioral Health. This enhanced information helps our clinical staff reach out to patients more successfully, increasing the effectiveness of our outstanding medical programs.

Condition Management
CIGNA Healthy Pregnancies, Healthy Babies Program
The CIGNA Healthy Pregnancies, Healthy BabiesSM program offers a full scope of educational and care management services to members who are pregnant or considering pregnancy. Because early intervention can help prevent prematurity and other poor pregnancy outcomes, the program offers a tiered incentive that is higher for women who enroll early in their pregnancies. To help assure that pregnant members participate actively in the program, payment of the incentive is contingent on program completion.
Pregnant members will undergo an initial risk assessment and routine follow-up assessments throughout their pregnancy. Based on these assessments, members will receive appropriate prenatal education and care management. Members who are assessed as high risk will be assigned to a Specialty Case Management Nurse. Members’ clinical assessments, risk stratification and history are managed through a single tool so that any member of the team can speak to a member knowledgably about her condition.
Condition Management
Comprehensive Oncology Program
The Comprehensive Oncology Program promotes cancer prevention and education, and offers active support for members diagnosed with cancer. Members with demonstrated cancer risk factors (eg: a prior history of cancer) who have not been compliant with screenings will receive outreach calls. Members who are in active treatment will receive appropriate services based on their level of need, and will work directly with an assigned Specialty Case Management Nurse.
The program offers educational materials, including materials developed in partnership with leading cancer support organizations. CIGNA also provides members with access to information about institutions that have been recognized for the quality of their care. An end-of-life program component focuses on supporting members and their families as they transition to hospice or palliative care and plan for the member’s passing.
